RISD Degree Project: Typographic Playground
Playground: A safe zone for free exploration, imagination, risk-taking, and enactment outside of of the concerns of ‘real’ life.
A collaborative project with Oscar Robert
Oscar and I experimented and “played” with three dimensional typography during our last semester at RISD. We designed installations for specific school events like the Senior Graphic Design Show, and the Lawn Party. From all of our experiments and final installations, we created various alphabets that we then translated into an interactive exhibit and crossword puzzle for the attendees.
The Projects
The RISD and Brown Lawn Party happens every April. The schools close down a main road between the two, and cover it in turf. It is a great opportunity for students from both campuses to get together and enjoy the Spring weather in a fun and creative environment. We created “Lawn” letters that we displayed in the cafeteria the week leading up to the event as an advertisement.
The senior exhibition in Woods Gerry Gallery at RISD rotates every month between majors at RISD. It is an opportunity for students to display work for other students and visitors to see. Each department has an opening night, where there is an open bar and snacks for students to enjoy while viewing the work. For the Graphic Design Senior Show, Oscar and I wanted to mock how many of the students come to the shows for the free alcohol. We smashed up glass bottles, and constructed letters that we then photoshopped and made into posters.
